Travel Photography - Sea + Sky Landscapes

After asking what’s my favorite destination —I love every place I visit for different reasons — most people want to know why I travel all over the world. Aside from my keen interest in learning about other cultures, there are myriad psychological benefits to traveling, including learning to be present centered, and developing resilience, skills that are especially useful in these days of the pandemic. Below are a few of my landscape photos from my round the world travels.

Traveling far afield — where the unknown resides around any corner — offers opportunities for resilience.

During these turbulent and challenging times, I strive for a sense of serenity, even if it lasts for only a moment.

Watching the ever changing shapes of clouds and the placid movement of the waters is a balm for the soul.

Travel Photography - Pastoral + Mountainous Landscapes

Whether I travel to far-afield locales or domestically, I often gravitate to non-urban environs. These are a few of my photographs that focus on some of my favorite subjects: sky, mountains and trees.

I derive a sense of comfort from nature.

Trails that thread through mountainous terrain into cozy villages and hamlets offer so many possibilities.

Unlike when I’m in most urban environs, when I’m traveling in the mountains, moody weather makes for a joyful experience.

The trees breathed energy into this bucolic scene that I wandered into.

Trees dominate my thoughts.

Sky + Sea Watercolors - Abstracts from My Travels

Even my abstracts are nature based. Here the sun penetrates the sea.

I see marine life in curious ways: with all their myriad shapes and colorful splendor.

I see the world in all its delightful mix of colors, shapes, and textures.

Many times I take my inspiration from the forms I see in the sky and sea.

In my sky, even the clouds have brilliant hues

Watercolors Part 3 - Landscapes

Until it’s safe to travel widely, I’m spending time painting. This is part 3 of my landscape watercolor series based on my domestic and international travels. Each image reflects a scene inspired by one or more of my journeys. (All of my paintings are available as prints.)

Sometimes forests have colors that only I can see.

For me, the sky and sea are one.

Even though the only forests I see now are in my dreams, they still snuggle me with comfort.

In my dreams, the colors of the sky, clouds, and trees can be unusual but no less beautiful and inspiring.

Entering each and every forest is a magical and transformative experience for me.

Clouds + Sky Tell a Story in the Amazon

Traveling along the Amazon River in Peru is a transformative experience. The haiku below reveals what I felt while cruising for a week on La Estrella Amazonica and in one of their two 18-person skiffs used to navigate the narrow tributaries.

Strong coffee in hand
Early morning sky wakes up
Clouds compete above.

Puffy marshmallows
Hover above green tangles
Monkeys grasp the air.

Sun streaks dark blankets
Coating an azure canvas
The sky cries again.

Scarlet fires blaze
A final sign of daylight
Night creatures beckon.

One last chardonnay
A perch above the wildness
Thin wisps covered in night shrouds.
