National Park Treasures Without The Crowds

Who wouldn't want to experience the magic of Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon or a host of other national parks? But the first thing that comes to mind for me when I think of visiting these parks in high season is fighting off the crowds.

So what if I told you that it's possible to have all the magic without all the madness? You'd probably think I was delusional. Check out my latest piece for The Huffington Post and you'll see from the accompanying slide show that you don't have to sacrifice scenery for sanity.

Had never even heard of 8 of the destinations on your list. Great article & for what it's worth I found your blog via your interview on Amateur Traveler re: Estonia.

Cool article. Every picture made me want to start packing. You're right, you don't think about national parks much at this time of the year but this certainly would be the time to avoid the crowds.

Hi MyKidsEatSquid, Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed all the photos. I'd like to start packing right now, too.

Got a friend coming who wants to go to Yosemite, so am headed over to HuffPo for all your tips.

Hi sarah, actually my HuffPo piece provides tips on the scenic alternative to Yosemite that sees less in the way of crowds. But if your friend is still into visiting Yosemite, contact me and I can provide tips for crowd-free trails during high season.

We visited the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, and Arches last March. Thrilling to realize you're the only person in a square mile - I'm not sure I'd ever want to do during the high season! Will definitely check out Isle Royale next time I'm in Maine too.

Hi Casey, It's always stunning to visit a national park and find out you're all alone with the natural wonders. Isle Royal, which is in Michigan, is also quite lovely too. I think you'd enjoy it.

Great list, with lots of places to add to my must-see list as well as reminders to re-visit some much loved spots. I just visited Pecos National Monument in New Mexico and it was a fascinating experience.

Hi Melanie, I've never been to Pecos National Monument. It looks gorgeous. I'll add it to my list. Thanks for mentioning it.
