Savvy Packing in New York City

Sure, I'm ever prepared when I'm traveling to far flung lands. I've blogged and guest blogged about how I rarely check luggage but always manage to pack a well-supplied first-aid kit and other cool gear so that my travels are hassle-free. Now I was interviewed at Limite Magazine, a design and lifestyle publication, about what I carry in my everyday bag in Manhattan. You'd be surprised how well prepared I am on a daily basis.

Check out the array of cool products I carry around with me. They all have something in common: they're all small in size, function efficiently and are of good quality.

Some familiar-looking things in there, and then again, some not. But an interesting array, I must say. It's always fun to learn about people through what they lug around with them!

A timely post, as I prepare to go into the city for the day with only a tiny shoulder bag to handle all my stuff (will be working in a busy backstage prep area with no secure place to stow). How much can I fit into a 4x7 envelope, essentially??

Hi Sheryl, Yes, it's always fun and eye-opening to see what people carry in their bags.

Hi aboutthebook, Why thanks. Appreciate that. I'm actually always on the look out for new tiny high-quality items.

Hi Casey, What I would do is get the appropriately sized (for the 4 x 7 envelope) zip lock bag and put as much as comfortably fits in that. Aside from my multitude notebooks and laptop, a lot of my ultra necessary gear would fit into that.

WOw! You really pack a lot of stuff in! Very impressive.

Hi NoPotCooking, But it's amazing that all this stuff doesn't take up that much room in the bag.

Love seeing what's in your travel pack, because well, I never go anywhere except to town. I'd travel just to acquire some of the awesome cool packs and bags that are available these days. I do have a few AmeriBags in my purse collection. Love those.

Hi Jane, I like AmeriBags. A couple of my friends has 'em and finds them very easy to carry.

Lots of disposable single use products. Any thoughts on how to travel light whilst cutting down on landfill waste?

J The Travel Authority said...

Hi Melanie, Great point. I try hard to reduce my carbon footprint by traveling often via human-powered locomotion, including bicycling, hiking, walking and cross country skiing. I also never check luggage, because checking luggage can significantly contribute to the extra fuel a plane must use. And, you are right, many of my products are disposable because I am attempting to pack ultra light. I do carry some eco-friendly products on my long journeys that are reusable. Thanks for your comment.

This is great. I really enjoyed the peek into your bag, because I'm about to do a lot of traveling this next year and need more tips. I travel relatively frequently but I never feel well prepared. With at least two kids with me, there's no way I won't be checking luggage, so I'd love to know if you have any recommendations for medium sized luggage that might work to hold minimalist travel gear for three people.

Oh my goodness. Were you a Girl Scout?? I feel so ill prepared after seeing what you have in your bag!

J The Travel Authority said...

Hi kris, No, I wish I'd been a Girl Scout. But I kinda made up for not having been one, for sure.

Perfect little travel bag! Just what you need!

I'm a terrible packer. Do you hire yourself out for the travel-light challenged? I do find the more you're on the move the better at it you get.

J The Travel Authority said...

HI sarah, I'd love to hire myself out. I know so many savvy men and women, even a lot of travel writers, who overpack.

Everything from headaches to music seems to be covered. Nice why to be prepared. You are probably more prepared daily than I am on most of my travels.

J The Travel Authority said...

HI Kirk, Overpreparedness is definitely my thing. :-)
